pedagogue
Contact jhk.violin@gmail.com for all inquiries about concerts, masterclasses, lessons, and juries.
Dr. Jin Hee Kim is an
expert teacher and accomplished violinist known for artistic innovation. At
Universities and in her private studio, Dr. Kim has mentored award-winning
students of all ages. She has received the first prize in the International
Chamber Music Ensemble Completion with Duo mit Affekt and the Most
Distinguished Musician Award (2006) from IBLA International Competition with
Trio ECA. She has performed at regional and international master classes of
renowned solo and chamber musicians, at music festivals, and as a soloist with
many local orchestras. Currently, she is working on a CD of the complete Ives
Violin Sonatas.
In 2010, Dr. Kim became an Adjunct Professor of Violin and Viola at Mount St. Joseph University (formerly College of Mount St. Joseph). Her prior teaching experience includes Adjunct Instructor of Violin and Viola at Eastern Nazarene College and Teaching Assistant to Roman Totenberg. She also served as Chamber Music Mentor at Gordon College, and Graduate Theory Department Teaching Assistant at the New England Conservatory of Music.
Dr. Kim has broadened her impact by teaching master classes and special courses in Kyrgyzstan and Ohio. Since 1996, she has maintained a private studio, teaching students who became laureates of the International String Competition of Golden Strings of America and the Boston Pops Orchestra Young Artists Competition, among others.
Dr. Kim’s innovative approach to performance blossomed in 1992 when she sustained an injury to her left hand. This inspired her to develop groundbreaking performance methods using multi-media. As a pioneer of multi-media performance art, she created her first composition, El Bara Art, which includes violin performance, recorded narrations, acting, sound effects, mime, and collage art. She continues to develop and perform new works.
As an avid chamber musician, Dr. Kim has performed in the United States, Canada, Korea, Italy and Germany, and in such prestigious venues as the Carnegie Weil Recital Hall in New York and the Sejong Center Chamber Hall in Seoul, Korea. Since 2013, Dr. Kim has worked toward performing the complete violin sonatas, the first cycle of which was broadcasted online for the Phoenix Ensemble Festival in Ann Arbor, MI. One of her chamber groups, Trio ECA, appeared in the “Arte Showcase” on Arte TV and in “Music and People” of FEBC Radio in Seoul. In 2004, EBA Trio appeared on CBS TV in Toronto, Canada.
Dr. Kim earned her Bachelor of Music, Master of Music and Graduate Diploma from the New England Conservatory of Music and her Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Boston University.
